On the Pier (or Fun with Seltzer)

Wanna know what we consider a fun treat in our family? A seltzer. I feel ridiculous saying this, but it's true. You might be thinking, whoa, slow down there, sister. Don't go getting all loco on me. What's next? Cinnamon in your coffee? Running out for some Breyers ice cream? Picking out some fancy cheese and crackers at Whole Foods? I know, I know: WE'RE LIVING ON THE EDGE.

But I stand behind the (geriatric) excitement of a seltzer. It's fun to mix with juice (or, when I'm not breastfeeding, vodka and lime juice), it's fun to drink on a hot day, it's fun to grab a can to take on the road. It's JUST PLAIN FUN.

Owen agrees. If you bring a seltzer anywhere in his line of vision, he will immediately begin the endless loop of, "Mama, may I have a sip?" (He makes his voice all high-pitched and sweet-sounding at the end for extra persuasive effect.) And he is usually successful in appropriating my seltzer before it's over, through either charm or theft. Exhibits A through D below:

We party.

  2. I have to admit that I am quite a fan of carbonation. Alex used to call it "fizzy water". The tradition lives on.
